Municipal Choice

A municipal electric authority—a “muni”—is owned and operated by the city or town. Unlike Unitil and the other investor-owned utilities (IOUs), a muni is not a profit-making business. Therefore, the rates are generally lower, and the service is better.

The Massachusetts Alliance for Municipal Electric Choice (MAMEC) is behind the campaign to pass legislation that would streamline creation of munis. The MAMEC web site has information about munis and the proposed legislation.
